NHIS program at the SMRL
1) The process begins with excavation at the generator worksite, with the material being loaded on
to trucks. The material is transported to the landfill where it is 2) weighed and then unloaded
3) in a designated lined cell at the facility. The landfill NHIS cell sites are continually
maintained and compacted to ensure that unloading is safe and efficient.
4) Once the material has been processed and placed, the City of Santa Maria records the location
of the NHIS using GPS coordinates. These coordinates are maintained for verification purposes with
each generator file. The City then issues a "certificate of beneficial reuse" to the generator and takes
responsibility for custody and control of the material.
In addition, CCRRI can provide clean soil for backfill via back haul to the generator site to replace the excavated NHIS.
